Sharjah Art Institute

The Sharjah Art Institute, housed in Bait Al Serkal was inaugurated on April 9, 1997 and is a proactive centre of learning and creativity (the Sharjah Art Museum had been located here from 1995 to 1997). This three-storey building with an area of 2600 sq. metres, in addition to an interior courtyard of 441 sq. metres, is a restored heritage building in Al Shuwaiheen area, built approximately 150 years ago.

The history of the house is fascinating. During the ownership of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, The Ruler’s father, the house was extended to include a number of shops, and the area to the side of the house became known as the Souk Mohammed bin Saqr, now Souk Al Bahar. In the early 60’s, due to its central location and size the house was transformed into the Sarah Hosman Hospital, the first hospital in Sharjah.
