Sharjah Art Center

Sharjah Art Center

The Sharjah Art Center, housed in Bait Al Serkal was inaugurated on April 9, 1997 the Sharjah Art Museumhad been there 1995 to 1997). This three-storey building with an area of 26 sq. meters, in addition to an interior courtyard of 441 sq. meters, is a restored heritage building in Al Shuwaihiyeen area, built approximately 150 years ago.

The history of the house is fascinating. During the ownership of Sheikh Mohammed bin Saqr AlQassimi, the Ruler’s father, the house was extended to include a number of shops, and the area to the side of the house became known as the Souk Mohammed bin Saqr. At this time the house was extended to include a number of shops and the side of the building became known as the Souq Mohammed Bin Saqr, now the Iranian Bazaar. In the early 60’s, due to its central location and size the house was transformed into the Sarah Hosman Hospital, the first hospital in Sharjah.
